Medicare is health insurance from the federal government. Most people qualify when they turn 65. If you are already receiving Social Security benefits, enrollment often happens automatically around your 65th birthday.

You may also qualify if you are under 65 and have been receiving Social Security Disability benefits for 24 months (2 years). In some cases, people of any age can qualify earlier if they have certain serious medical conditions, such as End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).
