Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement?

If you have chronic health problems that require repeated hospital stays, travel often, live in the middle of nowhere, or want the freedom to see any doctor that accepts Medicare, a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan may be a good fit. There are no networks and no referrals. It gives you flexibility and peace of mind.

However, Medicare Supplement plans are not inexpensive for most beneficiaries. The monthly premiums are usually higher, and you must also purchase a separate prescription drug plan.

If that does not sound like you, a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan may be the better choice. Medicare Advantage plans combine Part A and Part B into one plan and usually include prescription drug coverage (Part D). Many plans may also include dental, vision, and hearing benefits. Most plans start at $0 per month (you still pay your Part B premium) and include a yearly maximum out-of-pocket limit to protect you from high medical bills.

If you are on a low or fixed income, Medicare Advantage is often more affordable because the monthly cost is lower. If you do not use your healthcare very often, you can save money with Medicare Advantage since you are not paying higher monthly premiums for coverage you may not use.

The right plan depends on your health, your budget, and what makes you feel most comfortable.
